| Niece and I at dinner. |
This week I've been thinking a lot about families, and how important they are in this life. Friday my stepdad and younger brother were coming up from Southern Utah to go skiing with one of my brothers who lives up here. My stepdad decided he wanted all of our family that live in Salt Lake City to come to dinner with him. It was really nice to spend an evening at a restaurant with 3 of my 5 brothers, 2 sisters-in-law, 4 nieces, my stepdad and Justin.
One of my nieces is such a crackup, and she wanted to sit between my stepdad and me at our table. She told me all sorts of things since she's a talker. We started talking about animals, and I asked her what her favorite animal is. Instead of just blurting out a response like a lot of children do, she pauses and says, "alive or not alive?" She's only 6 --maybe 7-- so that's a pretty profound question. I said, "tell me one of each!" Her favorite non-living animal is a Dragon. This girl has always fascinated me. Ever since she was just a tiny kid, she's had funny and interesting things to say. (My favorite story of her is how a few years ago she asked for ketchup and salsa for Christmas. And was VERY excited upon receiving a bottle of each!)

They're both in their 80's and my grandpa's health is recently starting to be a little problematic (which is rough to watch even the littlest things go wrong with him). Whenever they do finally go, I don't think I'll ever NOT miss them. My grandpa is probably the closest example of what I believe God wants us to be that I've ever met in this life. When you walk into their home, or his presence, you feel safe instantly.

I have been thinking a lot lately about what really matters in life, and my family is a large portion of that. It really is important to me to stay close to them, for they are all you take with you when you leave this world. You can't take all of the stuff you accumulate, but you can take your relationships. I think that's why I try so hard to repair the ones that seem to need it. I hate losing friends. It takes a toll on me when I have to say goodbye to someone I care about. Even my friendships that I've had with people, I have a hard time sometimes realizing certain ones are no longer good to have, because I truly care about keeping people with me. You could take away all of my stuff, and I'd probably be pretty upset (ok really frustrated, please don't take my stuff!), but I could never survive without my relationships with people, i.e. friends, family, those I love. It's true, I'm a people person.

What do you value most in life? I'd love to hear it. Please post responses in the comments! Oh and here's that video I thought of at the funeral.

Family and friends are important to me too. We all need a good support system in our lives. I believe every person is in our life for a reason. Unfortunately, some of our relationships do go bad. I also believe that we have to learn from our mistakes made in them and become stronger people from it. I try to focus on the simple things that usually most people take for granted. I cherish good times in my life. And oh yeah, I forgot shoes. A girl can never have enough shoes. LOL
ReplyDeleteAgreed, but they're so hard to find lately with all the clown shoe platforms around. Blegh! Is it too hard to ask for a cute pair of black heels?
DeleteWhat a beautiful post! I like the photos you posted and especially like the comments you made. Family IS the most important treasure I have. I am so grateful all you children like each other and enjoy being together. I wish we did nore of the getting together part, but it's hard with us so split up. We are well on our way to the 38 grand children Grandpa and Grandma Halterman had. We have our 8 and if you guys will keep it up, we can make it to that number. You are all great kids and I love you all so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks mommy!
DeleteI *think* I got lost in that math LOL. I've been thinking about it alot lately too, Donavon's Mom is getting super sick with her Lupus and cant kick a kidney infection. Its breaking my heart that my kids are so teeny and if she goes soon, they wont remember her. Ack. I dont want to think about it...
