It started in roughly the spring of 2008. I was working as a receptionist when one day a quiet man about age 40-45 started working there too.
I worked there until Christmas of 2008, and somewhere in this short period of time, I became the object of his interest. He never crossed the sexual harrassment line, but I will give you a very detailed list of some the most memorably creepy things he has done.
One time I was bending over putting paper in our copier and he complimented me on my back pockets. Apparently they have a design on them that caught his eye... Right...
Another time I was given a very specific compliment, "Hey, I loved the boots you wore last Thursday". Who remembers that?
I mentioned to a lady I work with that I love Anthropologie's clothes but never buy them. So every few weeks an Anthropologie catalog would show up on my desk with the following note "This reminded me of you. Love Mr. X."
I was leaving on a trip to San Diego for a wedding and he left me a picture of a girl in a sarong that said "Have fun at the beach, wish I were going. Love Mr. X."
Another gift was of a printed google map of somewhere in Europe named Lana. He said "Lana, sure sounds like a beautiful place to vacation. Love Mr. X." GROSSSS! Don't google my name at home you weirdo.
Anything I had going on that I may have mentioned to my coworker, he would know about (she was not telling him, but I do have a loud voice). And he'd ask me about it right on the day I was doing it. To which I'd only reply "How did you know about that?" and never answer his questions.
Shortly after I quit in December 2008, I started getting emails to my personal email, which no one at work had, or he'd text me. I never gave him my number.
He'd email me and tell me I was missed at work, and he would walk by my desk and see that I was gone and get sad.
He went quiet for a while after I told him to stop emailing me. He started texting me shortly after that, and his texts at first came every few months. I'd never save his number so sometimes I'd be caught off guard thinking it was a friend. That is my mistake! As soon as I found out it was him though I'd ignore him.
As of late the texts have become closer together. I got one around my birthday in May this year saying, "Hey! Your birthday showed up on my calendar this week. Just thinking about you, are you still around?" Friendly right? NO... I've never been his friend and he's old and creeps me out.
The next text came in July when he asked me if I'd go to the Stadium of Fire with him since he was pretty sure I liked Carrie Underwood. 2 weeks ago I got a text saying "Hey John Mayer's in town next week which I'm sure you know, since I remember you love him. John Mayer always reminds me of you and when we worked together." HOW does he know this?
The last text came 5 days after that one on the night of the concert which I didn't attend. "Hey! John Mayer's tonight, are you here at the concert? I'd love to see you again."
Ok buddy, even if I had been there, I would never EVER have met up with you.
I replied to that last text with the following message, "I would really appreciate it if you would stop texting me."
And here is what I got, "So you are still alive!" And then he proceded to say that he's sorry he's been bugging me but he really values my opinions and has always been impressed with my artistic tastes. He also said it's really hard to find people around here like that. And then he asked me how I felt about the concert since he wasn't impressed with it. WHAT THE?! Was he not listening when I said no more texts?
Uh dude, my only thought is you know nothing about me, therefore you should NOT know that I have good artistic taste. Why does he pretend we are buddies? I have never been friendly with him past professional behavior at work. All I ever said to him at work was "hello" (I worked at the front desk so I had to say hi to everyone), and "Mr. Boss needs you in his office" (obviously I'm removing names). Other than that I avoided him.
What on earth is a girl to do in this situation? Obviously I can't ask him to leave me alone, that provokes further conversation from him. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated...

Next time he texts you, pretend you've changed your number. When he asks "Isn't this Lana?" say: "No, this is Dave. I just got this number last week."
ReplyDeleteI bet he reads your blog and this will make him mad! I'm nervous for you!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, just for your information 45 is not old!!! haha That is how old I happen to be and I know for sure that I am not old! Anyways - you can always have his number blocked from your phone and then he can't text you! Good LUck!

ReplyDeleteHa. I think Bethany is spot on, except it probably made him happy that he has had such a dramatic impact on your life. I'm definitely with Aaron on this one. The next time he texts respond with a "Who is this?" and then drop the bomb. Maybe we should get everyone together so we can have a discussion about all of your options at this point...
